IT'S BOTH

We are all quite familiar with the glass half-empty or glass half-full conversation. Its apparent purpose is to be an indicator of our personal bend towards either pessimism or optimism and how we see the world. In my opinion, the conversation also highlights our bend towards either/or thinking. Because the reality is that it's both.
I've been sitting with this quote from Helen Keller....

Friend, oh how suffering is present. AND glorious overcoming. It's both.
We can easily get stuck in merely one of these realities. EITHER everything is fantastic and we can only turn towards all of the overcoming OR everything is suffering and we are mired in the yuck of it all. Something changes when we invite both into our awareness. I think it creates a deeper connection to ourselves and each other.
The invitation is to us as individuals and as a human family. To be a witness of pain and resiliency. Two powerful forces that, when both acknowledged, keep moving us towards truth, empathy, wonder.
It's both.
